The 5 Biggest Myths About Blogging

The 5 Biggest Myths About Blogging

Hey there! Today I want to talk about some of the biggest myths that surround the blogging community. Some of these prevent people from starting a blog, and some give them a false sense of what blogging actually is.

The 5 Biggest Myths About Blogging

Researching when wanting to start a blog can seem very stressful, especially when you’re new and have your own preconceived notions and are just looking for some guidance. Looking at other blogs, it’s easy to see why some of these myths that I’m going to talk about come about, because sometimes what we see isn’t always what actually is happening.

Your Blog Has to Be Perfect When You Launch It

This is absolutely not true. This is one of the biggest myths that prevent future bloggers from starting their blog. Your blog does not have to be perfect from the get-go. You don’t have to have posts already on your blog before you make your site live. I would have the theme, about pages, social links, opt-in forms set up already, but don’t wait for perfection to strike before publishing it, because it will never come. You should always be striving for improvement as you blog, making tweaks as you go along. I know how hard this concept is, I want my blog to be perfect but I learned when I rebranded that it’s not going to be perfect at launch, or relaunch. Since I rebranded back in 2016, Creatively Lauren has changed, but it’s always changed in a direction I’m happy with and that I feel is easy to navigate for readers.

You Don’t Need a Specific Niche…Kind of

Now, this is where a lot of bloggers are divided. There are some bloggers that say you don’t need a niche and to blog about whatever you want. Then, there are some that say you do need a niche to be successful. I personally fall somewhere in the middle. I do agree that you need some kind of niche, because if you blog about everything and don’t have a defined audience, then it’s hard to create products/income because there isn’t a defined market. However, I don’t think you have to have a super specific niche. I think you can have a defined market segment but also share the lifestyle and more personal posts. I think it’s important to show your readers who you are and be personable so they can connect with you and your mission.

You Need to Post Every Day

This is absolutely not true, and can actually hurt you in the long run. Consistency is key when it comes to blogging but not at the cost of quality content. Quality over quantity always. Many new bloggers think that consistently posting means constantly posting and that’s not the case. This is one of the quickest ways to get blogger burnout. If you’re worried about posting every day, or Monday-Friday, then you’re probably going to be putting out fluff pieces just to make sure that you post every day. That does a disservice to your blog, as well as your readers. They want to see quality content from you, not fluff pieces.

You Need High Traffic to Make Money Blogging

This is one of the easiest ones to believe. It’s very easy to think that if you don’t have a big audience or readership, you’re not going to make money. Many bloggers think this when it comes to affiliate marketing or using affiliate links on their blog. Bloggers think that you have to have big numbers to use affiliate links because of low conversion rates. That’s just not true. Micro-influencers are becoming very popular. Bloggers with smaller, but highly engaged, audiences are making a good amount of money.  The key to affiliate links, and selling your own products, is about solving a problem to your readers and them trusting that you have the answers they’re looking for.

Blogging is Easy

This is the most false statement there is on blogging. Running a blog is not easy and it is so much more than just writing posts. It’s content creation, social media marketing, graphic design, copywriting, advertising, SEO research, and so much more that seem to fall under the umbrella of a blogger. So, if you’re looking to make an income from blogging, it’s going to be a lot more than just whipping up some posts. Not only do you have to write the posts, but you also have to create a marketing strategy and work on SEO so that people will actually find your blog posts. I feel so bad when bloggers get discouraged because they thought blogging was easy and it was an easy way to make money. It’s not, it’s a lot of work. But, if you’re passionate about what you want to share, and have the drive to learn, blogging is an incredible ride!

These myths can seem like they ring true on the surface, but when you dig into the nitty-gritty, they’re simply not true. What myths did you believe when you first started blogging? Let me know in the comments!
