Why You Need to Unplug Sometimes

Happy Wednesday!

I hope you have had a great weekend, and got a chance to unplug from your cell phone and/or computer! The reason I say this is because in our technology fueled world, it is so easy to get caught up in social media and get lost in your phone. It’s easy to get caught jumping from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to Pinterest and then start the cycle over, and over, and over, until you’ve spent most of your afternoon doing nothing but cycling through social media channels. This is why you need to unplug from your phone sometimes.

Since sitting on your phone or computer all day is not the most ideal thing for you to do, it is important that you take some time and unplug. It may seem a bit scary, that you may miss what is going on with the Kardashians or whoever, but you’re already miss what is going on around you in your life.

Have you ever noticed how time seems to fly by when your are cycling through your social media channels? That’s your valuable time slipping away. Yes, it is true that in a technological world, blogging is done exclusively on some device, yet you can still get distracted and suddenly, you’re knee-deep in a weird YouTube video and you have no clue how you got there! Just me? Okay, okay fine. When you’re too focused on the interesting article you’re reading that has nothing to do with anything you’re supposed to be doing, it’s like everything else around you doesn’t even matter; you actually tune out everyone around you. Did you ever notice that your friends or your significant other have to shout at you just to get your attention? Yup, you were locked and loaded into your phone.

When you’re so focused on your phone, you miss what is going on around you.

When you go out to the park but you’re on your phone, you don’t hear the sounds of nature around you. In today’s world, we take our phones with us wherever we go to get the perfect Instagram moment. However, when you’re busy looking for the perfect Instagram picture, you’re missing out on the beauty of the world around you. I say this because you’re not actually taking in what is going on around you, you’re just skimming it for the perfect picture.

Have you seen some of those articles about wedding guests taking their own videos and pictures and actually getting in the way of the photographer. I equate that to this situation. When you’re so busy trying to take the picture of the gushing couple, you’re embracing and feeling the energy in the moment because you’re not focusing on what is being said and going on.

I’m not saying to drop the phone all together, but take a day to just be with your friends and without the phone.

When you go that day without being hooked to your phone, you’ll realize that this is definitely something that you should do more often, because it is! You’ll also realize how relaxed you feel and probably more connected. When I took a day to not be on social media all the time, I felt wonderful. I also got a lot of stuff done around the house and when I was out, I noticed a lot more of what was going on around me.

All I’m saying, is to make sure that you’re still focusing on the beauty of the world and what is going on around you. Take the time to connect with the people in your life, beyond your phone screen.

What do you do when you unplug from your phone?

  1. I think it's so important to unplug now and again as well, to be honest sometimes constantly looking at my phone and my laptop drives me insane! My favourite time to unplug is when I'm on any kind of a holiday- I love just putting down my technology and soaking everything up :)www.thesundaymode.blogspot.com.au

  2. I always sleep with my phone on airplane mode and don't change it back until after I've gone through my morning routine. It helps keep me centered and feeling like I control my technology, instead of being a slave to it!Taking a full day off is a great idea too. Thanks!http://clairemariecarter.com
