Why You Should Start a Blog in College

Hey there! Today I wanted to share something that I think can be fun, starting a college blog! I know people say that the blogging community is over-saturated and there’s no point in starting. That’s not true, and I’m not saying to start a blog as a business if you don’t want to!

I’m a big proponent of finding a way to express yourself, especially in college. I think having a blog is an easy way to do that. You don’t have to make it anything fancy, you don’t even have to have it be a public blog. You can be anonymous or use your name. You can do whatever you want.

College is stressful

There are so many classes, assignments, projects and things that need to get done that you can get very overwhelmed. It is important to be able to relax and make sure that you don’t lose your creative energy in the process of school. Writing a blog allows you to release your thoughts, share what you like, and just be yourself. With stressful classes, you need to be able to have an outlet for relaxation and fun, and if you’re a writer then a blog is the perfect place!

Inexpensive startup costs

Starting a blog is actually very inexpensive. I know, in college you are saving money, paying for tuition and books, and just trying to get by. I started my blog on Blogger, for free, and still host on Blogger. You can also start a free wordpress.com blog. If you do, it will be a .blogger.com or .wordpress.com URL, which is fine if you’re just doing it for fun. I started with a .blogger.com URL and eventually bought a domain name.

If, and when, you decide to buy a domain, or move to a self-hosted site, there are many inexpensive options to start out with. I suggest using Siteground for your hosting, I have heard nothing but good things about them. I used Google Domains to get my domain names. Teaches skills

Before entering college, and starting a blog, I thought you learned skills either on the job or in the classroom. I didn’t think that you could learn skills through blogging, but you definitely can. Some skills may be useful for your daytime job, some may be skills you have wanted to learn for fun. Some skills you can learn through blogging are:

  • Time management
  • Graphic design
  • Communication
  • Writing and editing
  • Social media marketing

I know it may seem like it, but these skills could be important in your daytime job, or if you ever want to make blogging your full-time job. You should always want to hone in on current skills and want to learn new skills in blogging. That is half the fun to me when it comes to blogging.

Allows you to be creative

A lot of times, your classes and projects don’t allow you to be as creative and free as you would like to be. Starting a blog allows you that freedom to set up what you want and talk about what you want. You can design your site however you want, make your graphics however you would like, and do whatever you want essentially. You can be as creative as you like with your blog.

Meeting awesome people

The most awesome part of blogging is joining groups that allow you to meet awesome people. I’m part of several blogging groups on Facebook and there are so many helpful and kind people in the blogging community. You can make friends and even find people in your area that blog as well!

If you were on the fence about starting a blog, I hope I helped convince you to do it! If not, that is okay. Did you start blogging in college? Do you still blog? Let me know in the comments!
