Why You Should Take an Adult Career Development Class in College

Happy Monday!

Last semester I took an adult career development class and the only reason was because it was on my major map as a requirement for my degree. When I first saw the class, I was dreading it, I did not want to take it. However, by the end of the semester, it was one of the most helpful classes I’ve ever taken in college. Here’s why I believe every college student should take an adult career development class in their college career.

You Learn About Yourself as a Person

It’s incredible how much you can learn about yourself in one class throughout a semester. You go through so many activities that get down to really knowing who you are as a person. It can seem odd to be doing that in class, and it may make you feel awkward, but it will definitely help you in the longrun to know about yourself.

You Learn About What You Want in a Career

As well as learning about yourself as a person, you learn about what you want in a career. This goes beyond you saying “I want a six-figure salary”. You get into the nitty-gritty on what you truly want. You usually participate in vision lessons, where you vision yourself in your future career and write down everything about it. You get so in detail, you mention what kind of shoes you are wearing. It got very detailed! However, this is meant to help you refine your vision of what you truly want and where you really see yourself in your career.

You Learn Valuable Skills

Many college students do not know how to write a proper resume summary, or a resume at all. Many college students also don’t know anything really about LinkedIn. After this class, that will change! LinkedIn is becoming the way to be discovered by recruiters, meaning it is vital to your future career to know how to use it to your advantage and make your profile stand out from others. In my class, this was actually a whole project done at the end of the semester, and I’m so glad that we did it!

You Gain Resources

Throughout the class, you’ll gain many resources to help you beyond the classroom and outside of your collge career. This class is meant to help you get the career you want after college, so they will give you the resources that you need and that you can go to after the class is over!

My adult career development class changed me view of what I wanted, and the view of the class. I highly recommend every college student, especially those who may not know what they want to do yet {me}, takes this class. Even if you don’t completely get the answers your looking for, you will have the skills to help yourself get there!

Have you taken an adult career development class? Did you enjoy it?

  1. I wish I would have known that something like this existed when I was in college. It sounds like it could be very beneficial to undergrads. It's so important to learn skills for the workforce, like creating a resume that stands out, how to write a cover letter, how to dress for job interviews, etc. Plus anything that helps you learn about yourself is definitely worth it.
